Where we work

Indigenous peoples constitute a least 370 million individuals representing more than 5000 peoples, most of whom live in developing countries. Most of IWGIA's direct project support is therefore directed at indigenous organisations and communities in the South.

Indigenous peoples in developed countries are, however, often also disproportionately poor and marginalized compared to national populations. They continue losing their territories and natural resources, and they suffer from high rates of social maladies. IWGIA therefore also gives limited project support to indigenous peoples in Russia.

With regards to documentation, information dissemination and human rights advocacy, IWGIA works on the global level and tries to be as inclusive as possible.
