The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council, with a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.
For a number of years IWGIA has given high priority to the work of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. IWGIA supports indigenous initiatives aimed at:
• Raising awareness and understanding of international processes, in particular the Permanent Forum, among indigenous peoples' organisations. • Ensuring that information and decisions related to the Permanent Forum are being fed back down from international to local and regional levels. • Establishing direct consultation and feedback mechanisms that ensure inputs from the regions into the Permanent Forum. The activities supported include preparatory meetings and the participation of indigenous representatives in various meetings and conferences related to the Permanent Forum. The support is allocated via IWGIA’s Human Rights Programme and the Human Rights Fund, which IWGIA administers together with 4 other NGOs. In our Annual Reports you can find information about the particular activities supported in previous years.
