Land Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Africa

by Albert Kwokwo Barume

As in many other parts of the world, the indigenous peoples of Africa are increasingly being dispossessed of their ancestral lands. Indigenous peoples have not let this happen without reacting and in some casesthey have gone to court, challenging those who threatened them — colonial authorities, governments or corporate companies. The purpose of this book has been to analyze some of the land cases filed by indigenous peoples in selected African countries, in order to see how the judiciary has dealt with this human rights thematically, and what lessons can be learned from these court cases.

Land, People and Politics: Contest over Tribal Land in Northeast India

Eds. Walter Fernandes and Sanjay Barbora

Land is the centre of most conflicts in Northeast India because of its importance in the life of the people of the region, particularly its tribal communities. It is also the resource most under attack, in the tribal areas in particular. This book is an attempt to understand the processes that result in tribal land alienation and the consequent conflicts in the region. The essays in this book attempt to disaggregate the received knowledge on land use systems in Northeast India, by using a mixture of ethnography and archival data.

Colombia: The Case of the Naya

The violations of the fundamental rights of the black, indigenous and peasant farmer population of the Colombian Pacific, regarded by all the armed forces, both regular and irregular, as the “collateral  damage” of any armed conflict, may have objectives of their own, independent of the Colombian internal armed conflict.  The territorial uprooting of these peoples may be an objective in itself, and not a consequence of the conflict. This can be concluded from the links between armed actions, dispossessions of community lands and the false legalizations of these lands once seized.

The Concept of Indigenous Peoples in Asia - A Resource Book

Edited by Christian Erni. This book does not intend to dwell or expand on the controversy on the applicability of the concept to Asia. Its point of departure is the fact that more and more groups in Asia identify themselves as indigenous peoples, and its ultimate purpose is to provide assistance in addressing the practical question of how the concept of indigenous peoples can be applied in the particular context of Asian nations. This is done by means of a compilation of key articles, both previously published and unpublished, which directly or indirectly address the issue from historical, anthropological, legal and indigenous activists' perspectives, and at international, regional, national and local levels.
