Argentina

Argentina occupies a continental surface area of 2,791,810 sq km between the Andes mountain range in the west and the southern Atlantic Ocean in the east and south. Argentina ranks second in land area in South America and is bordered by Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast, and Chile in the west and south.

Following independence from Spain in 1816, after almost three centuries under Spanish rule, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.
