Important news:

The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples blocked

The process of adopting the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples came to a halt on Tuesday November 27. A non-action resolution put forward by the Namibian delegation was supported by a majority in the UN General Assembly's Third Committee. This means that there will be no voting on the Declaration during the present plenary session of the General Assembly.

New sections on IWGIA's website:


  Thematic Focus: Thematic Focus puts focus on different issues of importance to indigenous peoples. The theme will follow IWGIA's publication Indigenous Affairs, which is published three to four times a year. The  Thematic Focus 2/2006 is Arctic Oil and Gas Development.

  Country Profiles: The country profiles on Laos and Argentina are now on the website. The country profiles contain extensive information on indigenous peoples and issues affecting the indigenous peoples in selected countries.

  Download publications: All issues of Indigenous Affairs since 1996 are now available for downloading.

  Photo archive: New pictures are available from the following countries: Colombia and Rwanda.
