Arctic: Study looks at wellbeing of Native children in the Arctic

A new study looks at the wellbeing of Native children in Alaska and other Arctic areas. Researchers worked with indigenous groups to craft a survey that could accurately capture the happiness of people living in the Arctic. The teams came up with several important measurements, including access to traditional food, health care and the importance of family.

Norway: Saami in charge of the Finnmark

On 30 June 2006 representatives for the Norwegian state handed over the ownership of the land in Finnmark County - a landmass in Northern Norway of the size of Switzerland and with a calculated value of 35 billion Norwegian kroner (USD 5,56 billion). This is the result of long time struggle and a great achievement on the path to Saami rights.

Sweden: Sami People to court for land rights

May 2006

Several Samis have made application for summons to the courts against The Kingdom of Sweden for recognition of Sami land rights. At the moment there are 12 court cases in Sweden concerning Sami land rights – and more cases are being filed by Sami against the State of Sweden.

Russia: Indigenous peoples in Russia

April 17, 2006 the Russian government issued a new decree with a new and enlarged list of officially recognised indigenous peoples of the "Russian North, Siberia and the Far East". The list includes 40 peoples.

Nuuk, Greenland: Inuit ask Europeans to support its seal hunt and way of life

Inuit in Greenland are alarmed at reports in European capitals that some governments are contemplating legislation restricting sealskin imports.

Canada election: Low representation of indigenous peoples 

January 2006


The result of the resent federal election in Canada shows that only a few Aboriginal peoples have been elected as MPs. Zebedee Nungak from Canada's National Aboriginal News Source, Windspeaker, suggests that "This election's results should unite the Indian, Inuit and Metis people of Canada in one great drive to persuade this particular Parliament to tackle a major reform in its make-up: That of getting the nation's Aboriginal peoples properly represented in Parliament."
