ACHPR Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities

The establishment of the ACHPR Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in 2001 was a remarkable step forward in the promotion and protection of the human rights of indigenous peoples in Africa. 

Mandate
The mandate of the Working Group is to:

·       Raise funds for the Working Group’s activities;

·         Gather information from governments, indigenous peoples and and other relevant sources on violations of indigenous peoples' human rights; 

·          Undertake country visits to study the human rights situation of indigenous peoples; 

·        Formulate recommendations on appropriate measures to prevent and remedy violations indigenous peoples' human rights;

·         Submit activity reports at the African Commission's ordinary sessions;

·         Co-operate with international and regional human rights institutions.


The mandate has been renewed a number of times since the Working Group's establishment in 2000. The current mandate is provided for in a resolution from the 46th ACHPR's session held in Banjul, the Gambia, in November 2009.

Activities
The activities of the Working Group include country visits, information activities and research, sensitization of member states and other stakeholders, formulation of recommendations to the ACHPR as well as cooperation with other international and regional human rights mechanisms.
