The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights held its 42nd session in the Republic of Congo from 14-28 November 2007. IWGIA participated in the session, and facilitated the participation of eight indigenous representatives.
The African Commission welcomes adoption of the UN Declaration
During the 42nd session, the African Commission issued a
communiqué welcoming the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The communiqué underlines the fact that the UN Declaration is in line with the African Commission's work on indigenous peoples' rights, and that the Declaration will become a valuable tool in the African Commission's continued efforts to promote and protect indigenous peoples' rights in Africa. Examination of Rwanda's state report During the examination of Rwanda's state report at the 42nd session, many issues were raised regarding indigenous peoples' situation in the country. This shows the ACHPR's commitment to highlighting the precarious human rights situation of indigenous peoples and that established monitoring mechanisms are being used to promote their rights. Mandate of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations / Communities in Africa renewed
For indigenous peoples, another important development in the 42nd session was the adoption of a resolution extending the mandate of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations / Communities in Africa with two years, with effect from 28 November 2007.
