The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is one of two bodies of the Inter-American system for the protection and promotion of human rights in the Americas. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C. The other body is the Inter-American Court of Human Rights with its headquarters in San José, Costa Rica.
The IACHR is the main autonomous organ of the Organization of American States (OAS). Its mandate is found in the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights, and it represents all the member States of the OAS.
The Commission receives petitions on situations afflicting indigenous peoples and communities, applying the fundamental precepts of the 1948 American Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Man, and the 1969 American Convention on Human Rights. In response to these petitions, the Commission issues resolutions, reports and recommendations to States, and has requested urgent measures to ensure respect for the rights recognised in the Inter-American human rights instruments, which States must respect and guarantee to all inhabitants.

The IACHR meets in Ordinary and Special sessions several times a year. Its Executive Secretariat carries out the tasks delegated to it by the IACHR and provides legal and administrative support to its work.
