Kenya: Ogiek hunted by police and paramilitary units

January 2008

Twenty houses belonging to Ogiek families in the Mau Forest in Kenya have been burned to the ground, allegedly under potection from security personnel. The Ogiek are being hunted as part of a brutal manhunt to find the culprit of the death of a police officer who was shot in his head with an arrow. There is no evidence that any Ogiek has been involved in the death of the police officer.

Kenya: Ogiek people killed like rabbits

February 2008

Realizing that the Ogiek had fled the area around Chepyuk and took refuge at Teldet and Chepkitale, the Sabaot Land Defense Force (SLDF), Kenya's most dangerous and notorious, at least 1000 men strong armed militia, has now taken advantage of the lawlessness and the commitments of the police elsewhere to hunt and kill the Ogiek like rabbits.

Congo: Arrest over abduction of indigenous family's child

March 2008

The High Court in southwestern Congo has indicted a member of an influential family on charges that he was responsible for the forced disappearance 19 years ago of a child from a family of indigenous people.

Logging company CIB in Congo Brazzaville has obtained FSC certification of the second of its forest concessions

May 2008

Congolaise Industrielle des Bois (CIB), a subsidiary of the Danish DLH group, announced May 26 that its Pokola Forest Management Unit (FMU) has achieved FSC certification. Pokola FMU becomes the 2nd of CIB’s four forest areas to reach this significant achievement after CIB’s Kabo FMU achieved FSC certification in May 2006.

Eviction of pastoralists from Usangu Plains, Tanzania

June 2008

In the period from May 2006 to May 2007 large numbers of Sukuma agro-pastoralists and IlParakuiyo, Taturu and Barabaig pastoralists and their livestock have been evicted from the Usangu Plains in Mbarali district, Mbeya region. It is estimated that more than 400 families and 300.000 livestock have been moved, and that a high number of livestock have died or been lost in the process.
