IWGIA's involvement in the work of the Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Peoples

In 2006, IWGIA participated in an International Expert Seminar on Best Practices for the Implementation of the Recommendations of the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples. After the seminar, the book
Indigenous Rights. The UN Special Rapporteur Experiences and Challenges was published in cooperation with Rights and Democracy, Canada, and the Canadian Friends Service Committee. The book looks at the Special Rapporteur mechanism, how it functions, and what has been achieved so far. 

Support to indigenous organizations' dialogue with the Special Rapporteur

IWGIA has fostered close cooperation with the Special Rapporteur by providing him with information on the situation of indigenous peoples. In recent years, IWGIA has also given special priority to supporting indigenous initiatives aimed at facilitating dialogue with the Special Rapporteur, and providing him with information on the human rights situation of indigenous peoples. 

Activities supported by IWGIA in relation to the work of the UN Special Rapporteur on
Indigenous Peoples include:
 
· Providing financial support to activities in connection with the Special Rapporteur’s country missions.

· Providing financial and technical support to follow-up activities on the Special Rapporteur’s country reports.

· Providing financial support to indigenous representatives to participate in UN Commission on Human Rights sessions to present their views on the Special Rapporteur’s reports.
 
The support is allocated via IWGIA’s Human Rights Program.
