Botswana

Botswana is the oldest multiparty democracy in Africa; it has a good human rights record and has also had one of the most impressive economic growth in Africa (based mainly on diamond mining and to a lesser extent on tourism). The country has relatively well-developed social security and health care systems, including various poverty alleviation schemes.

But while Botswana is committed, at least on paper, to social justice and broad public participation in its political system, the majority of the approximately 55,000 San (also known as Basarwa/Remote Area Dwellers) and 4,000 Nama continue to face a number of serious problems, including human rights abuses.
