IWGIA's Activities in Botswana

In 1992, when the idea of having a San advocacy organisation was being formulated, John Hardbattle approached IWGIA for support.  IWGIA provided a small seed grant to FPK in 1993 and the first major IWGIA project grant was given shortly thereafter (1993-1996: 'First People of the Kalahari: Creation of the First Bushman or N|oawke Organisation'). This was followed by a bridging phase grant (July – September, 1977) and a second project grant, entitled 'Recognition of the Bushmen's Land Rights, Human Rights, and Cultural Rights in Botswana'. This project was supposed to last from 1997-2000 but was extended twice, to be finally closed in March, 2002. IWGIA continued to fund the legal work implemented by FPK in relation to CKGR in 2002. In 2003-2004 IWGIA funded together with other donor agencies the Central Kalahari Game Reserve Coalition and the CKGR court case.
