Russia: Evenkiiskaya hydroelectric dam postponed
RusHydro, the Russian energy company planning to build the controversial Evenkiiskaya hydroelectric dam in Krasnoyarsk region has announced that it will not decide this year whether or not to go ahead with the plan.
The Evenkiiskaya dam would create the world's largest artificial lake, submerging approxiamtely 9000 km², much of which is virgin forest. It would involve the displacement of many indigenous Evenks and the flooding of at least six Evenki villages. In August 2008, the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination urged Russia to withdraw support for the project, as it threatens the indigenous peoples' way of life.
