Since 1986, we have published a global report on the state of the rights of indigenous peoples. Our report is called The Indigenous World. The more than 30 reports can be seen below and downloaded.
For IWGIA, documentation goes hand in hand with promoting, defending and protecting the rights of indigenous peoples.
We are monitoring and documenting the status of indigenous peoples' rights and produce solid publications and fact-based reports to strengthen and empower indigenous peoples to fight violations of their rights. Many of our publications are co-productions produced in close cooperation between IWGIA and our partners in English and/or Spanish.
The Indigenous World 2020 adds to the documented records, highlighting the impact of climate change and increase in attacks and killings of Indigenous Peoples while defending their lands and other natural resources. The 66 country reports and 17 reports on international processes in this edition underscore these global trends.
This report documents how government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have not only failed to alleviate the impact of COVID-19 on India’s Indigenous Peoples, but made their often already desperate situation even worse. To make matters worse, the government used the temporary paralysis of the country as an attempt to undermine existing environmental safeguards and laws protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and other marginalised sectors, ostensibly in order to help the country recover from the economic impact of the pandemic and to strengthen India’s self-reliance.
This book forms an essential contribution to the process of legitimising the recognition and exercise of the world’s Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination in domestic and international law. It further offers a space for analysis, dialogue and debate aimed at coordinating visions and sharing experiences of the difficult path to building and practising autonomy and self-government.
Every year, IWGIA produces a global report on the rights of indigenous peoples, The Indigenous World.
The Indigenous World provides an update of the current situation for indigenous peoples worldwide and a comprehensive overview of the main global trends and developments affecting indigenous peoples. We have published the report every year for over 30 years.
